A team that still featured such brilliant talents as Torres, Nene, Simoes and of course the incomparable Eusébio had little success in 1972, despite winning the Independence Cup. This success was a small consolation prize following the failure to qualify for the European Cup. Indeed a defeat against Scotland in the qualifiers had forced them to beat the Belgian group leaders in the last match, but a 1-1 draw meant they would spend yet another great tournament on the sidelines.
