Having ledAS Roma to fourth place the previous season amid a flurry of goals, Czech coach Zdenek Zeman was hoping
to take his team even higher up the Serie A league table at the start of the 1998-99 season.
Once again, there was some excellent attacking soccer and plenty of goals from strikers Marco Delvecchio, Francesco Totti and Paulo Sergio scored
42 - but too many goals conceded at the other end proved costly and saw Roma finish the season in fifth place, a point far cry from qualifying for the Ligue des champions.
