The 1982 team featured players like Prohaska, Krankl, Schachner, Pezzey and Jara who made their name at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. The way in which qualification for the second round in Spain was achieved did little to encourage Austria because of Gijón's famous non-aggression pact. France was too strong in the next round, Austria's competition being stopped.
