Handball kits and volley at Black Friday

Goalkeeper and Libero: The Distinctive Shirt

In handball, just like in volleyball, a player wears a distinct colour. The handball rules require the goalkeeper to wear a shirt that is a different colour from all players on the field, from both teams, and the opposing goalkeeper: this allows referees to immediately identify the only player allowed to touch the ball with their legs and feet in their area. PSG Handball offers this goalkeeper shirt, often with long sleeves. In volleyball, the libero, a defensive specialist who cannot serve or attack above the net in international competition, wears a shirt whose dominant colour contrasts with that of their teammates.

The Blues of Handball

The shirts of the French national team for handball, home, away, and third, are available in men's and women's cuts. Both teams have made history: the men were crowned Olympic champions in Beijing in 2008 and in London in 2012, before winning gold again in Tokyo in 2021, the same year the women also won the Olympic title. The supporter version, slightly looser than the players' kits, features the rooster and national colours. The printing of a name or number follows the international rule, which allows numbers from one to ninety-nine, in a colour that is clearly different from that of the shirt.

FFHB Referee Shirts and Kempa

Referees in handball work in pairs and wear identical shirts, in a colour that must not resemble either team's: hence shirts available in several bright colours, chosen before the match based on the uniforms involved. The FFHB Referee shirts from Hummel, a brand founded in Hamburg in 1923 and now Danish, dress the referees of the French handball federation. The referee shirt Kempa, from the German brand named after Bernhard Kempa, inventor of the famous "Kempa trick," is an alternative for club referees. These lightweight polyester shirts endure the many sprints of a match.

Clubs, Youth, and Female Volleyball Players: Team Shirts

To outfit a club, one looks for a shirt available in a range of sizes, from children's to adult sizes, matched with a short from the same range. The Kempa Athletics and the Select Fire, from the Danish ball brand founded in 1947, meet this need, alongside the Select Grippy and the Hummel Blaze for handball schools. The Mizuno Sohei shirt for women, cut close to the body, is designed for volleyball, where any fabric that floats during a block should be avoided. The Hummel Pink October shirts, in pink, are worn during matches dedicated to raising awareness for breast cancer screening, and supporters wear them to support the cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does THW Kiel represent for handball?

Founded in 1904, THW Kiel is one of the most successful clubs in Germany and has won the Champions League several times, notably in 2007 and 2012, years of a treble. Its often packed arena makes it a stronghold of European handball.

Is a supporter handball shirt suitable for playing?

Yes, for a match with friends, as it is made from breathable polyester. In a club setting, however, the entire team must wear identical and numbered kits, with the goalkeeper in a distinct colour: it's better to have a team shirt purchased in bulk.

What size volleyball shirt should I choose?

In volleyball, the shirt is worn close to the body to avoid interference during blocking or touching the net. Take your usual size, or even a size down if you're between sizes, and prefer a women's cut, like the Mizuno Sohei, for better support.

What shirt should I gift to a handball supporter?

The shirt of the French national team, either men's or women's, or that of their favourite club, such as PSG Handball or THW Kiel, makes a well-appreciated gift. For a child, select the size according to their stature and consider the printing of their favourite player's name.

What does a third shirt mean?

The third is the third shirt of a team, after the home and away. It is used when the two previous ones create a colour confusion with the opponent, and it is often the most original of the three, sought after by collectors.
