The moccasin gets its name from the footwear of the indigenous peoples of North America, made from a single piece of leather that wraps around the foot from beneath and closes on top with a sewn piece. This soft construction can also be found in the modern moccasin. The version with a cut-out leather strap appeared in the 1930s; American students in the 1950s would slide a one-cent coin into it, hence the name of the penny loafer. It then became a staple of preppy style, smart without being stuffy.

Sebago was founded in 1946 in Portland, Maine, which is historically known for hand-stitched moccasins in the United States. Its Classic Dan is a penny loafer with a beef roll construction, featuring rolled and sewn reinforcements on either side of the leather strap, a signature of the model. The Waxy finish, made from polished leather, better withstands rain and ages beautifully over time. The Classic Joe, the Acadia, and the Bryan extend this craftsmanship, while the Gary Jobson pays tribute to the American sailor who won the America’s Cup in 1977.
The Aigle Tarmac, from the French brand founded in 1853, combines full-grain cowhide leather and a Blake construction, stitched through the sole, with a rubber outsole that grips on all surfaces. The Pikolinos Azores, from the Spanish brand based in Elche, features a perforated upper that breathes and elastic bands on the instep for easy slipping on. To last longer, a smooth leather moccasin should receive regular treatment with a nourishing balm, and wooden shoe trees absorb moisture and maintain its shape.

Choose them to fit well, as leather stretches and molds to the foot after a few days. The heel should not slip out of the shoe with each step, and the toes should not touch the front.
The penny loafer has a cut-out leather strap across the top. The tassel loafer replaces this strap with two small leather tassels, giving it a slightly more dressed-up look.
Wear them for a few hours each day at home so the leather molds to your foot without causing pain. A leather conditioner applied to tight areas helps soften them, and a shoe tree maintains their shape between wears.
Stuff them with newspaper and let them dry away from a radiator, as heat can crack the leather. Once dry, nourish them with a suitable cream to restore their flexibility.
Rubber-soled models, like the Aigle Tarmac, provide better cushioning and grip than leather soles. For long days on your feet, a padded leather insole adds appreciated comfort.
