Warm, lightweight and soft, from the city to the trail.
The fleece was born in the late 1970s in the United States, developed by a Massachusetts mill to provide an alternative to wool: a brushed polyester knit that traps air, insulates against the cold, stays warm even when wet and dries very quickly. Lightweight and soft, it became popular in hiking before making its way into the city. It can be worn on its own in mid-season or as a mid-layer under a waterproof jacket.
Sweatshirts and jumpers also come in:
All the tops are gathered on the sweatshirts and jumpers page.
The outdoor fleeces, like the Didriksons from the Swedish brand founded in 1913, the Regatta, Whistler, Trespass, or Dare 2B, prioritise function: breathable knit, full zip or zip collar to regulate heat, zipped pockets, fitted cut that slides under a jacket. The sleeveless fleece, like the Didriksons Kiana, keeps the torso warm while leaving the arms free. The models with a hood protect the neck from the wind.
The sherpa or teddy fleece, like the Selfhood Chunky Block, mimics the sheep's wool with its thick loops for a cozy style. The fleece-cape Tom Tailor, with a shawl collar, plays the elegance card. Committed brands, like Armedangels, or Result using recycled materials, use polyester made from plastic bottles. Wash your fleece at thirty degrees, inside out, without fabric softener, in a washing bag to limit the release of microfibres, and avoid the tumble dryer.
Great bargains can also be found in the good deals, promotions, clearance, sales, Black Friday. The new arrivals showcase the latest collections, and the items shipped in 24h are prepared and dispatched within 24 hours. The highlights of the year follow a stable order: Black Friday at the end of autumn, the holiday season, the winter sales, the French Days in spring, then the summer sales and back to school.
Wash it inside out, at thirty degrees, without fabric softener that crushes the fibres. Avoid the tumble dryer at high temperature and let it dry flat: it dries very quickly and maintains its loft.
The sherpa is a looped knit that mimics sheep's wool, very soft and warm. Models like the Selfhood Teddy are appealing for their cozy look and can be worn in the city as well as on walks.
A thin fleece serves as a mid-layer under a jacket or can be worn alone in mid-season. A thick fleece, warmer, replaces a jumper in winter and is suitable for hiking in cold weather.
Take your usual size to wear it alone, one size up to layer over a jumper. To wear it under a waterproof jacket, keep a fitted cut that doesn’t restrict movement.
Yes, that's one of its strengths: the brushed polyester knit retains its insulating properties even when wet and dries very quickly. That's why it became popular in hiking before moving to the city.
