The shell of a hard suitcase determines its weight and durability. Polycarbonate bends upon impact and then returns to its shape, which reduces cracking during handling in the hold. ABS, being lighter and cheaper, is stiffer and may crack on a hard impact; it is often found combined with polycarbonate. Polypropylene combines lightness with good resistance to impacts. Travelite, a family-owned German brand based in Hamburg and active since 1949, offers its Air Base, Skaii, or Briize ranges in several sizes. The Got Bag Re:Shell, made from plastic recovered from the sea, is aimed at travelers mindful of the impact of their luggage.

The soft wheeled bag combines the fabric of a travel bag with a frame and two wheels. Lighter than a hard suitcase of the same volume, it compresses in a trunk or overhead compartment and can hold a bit extra due to its flexibility. The Eastpak Transit'R range, available in cabin size to large size, is a good example, featuring thick fabric and compartments to separate clothes and shoes. On the downside, the fabric does not protect fragile items from impacts as well: they should be placed in the center, surrounded by clothes. The children's trolley Tann's Camille, at its size, allows little ones to pull their own luggage.
The cabin size generally measures around fifty-five centimeters high, including wheels and handle, but each airline sets its own dimensions and a maximum weight: these should be checked before booking. A medium suitcase, around sixty-five centimeters, suits a week for one person; the large suitcase, over seventy-five centimeters, is for longer stays or families. The expandable versions, marked ext. by travelite, gain a few litres through an extra zipper, handy for return shopping, at the risk of exceeding the allowed weight in the hold.
The four swivel wheels allow you to push the suitcase alongside you effortlessly on smooth train station and airport floors. Two fixed wheels, larger and better protected, roll better on cobblestones and are less likely to break. The telescopic handle should lock securely at various heights, and a side handle helps lift the suitcase from the baggage carousel. The TSA lock, identifiable by its red diamond, can be opened by US security officers with a special key, without forcing the lock. Reinforced corners and crisscross straps inside protect the contents.
A strap, passed around the telescopic handle of the first suitcase and the handle of the second, allows you to roll them with one hand. Some models also have a slot on the back to slide one suitcase over another.
Nest them inside each other, from largest to smallest, to take up only the space of one. Store them empty and clean, away from moisture, with an odor-absorbing pouch inside.
The price depends on the material of the shell, the quality of the wheels and handle, the locks and warranties. Thick polycarbonate, silent double wheels, and robust locks last longer than thin shells.
Roll clothes instead of folding them, place shoes at the bottom, wheel side down, and tuck small items inside. Packing cubes separate items and make security checks easier.
Yes, if it meets the dimensions set by the airline. It then counts as the child's carry-on luggage, allowing them to pull it themselves in the airport and store their games for the flight.
