The chino shorts, made from a tightly woven cotton fabric with Italian pockets, are the dressiest option: the Blend He Mason or the Oakley Baseline follow this clean line. The cargo features large patch pockets on the thighs, handy for outings or travel, like the Blend He Morgan or the Revolution model. The bermuda, which is longer, stops at the knee or just below: the Payper Craft and the Napapijri N-Deline offer more coverage for the legs. These end-of-line items are fully branded models, simply available in a more limited choice of sizes and colours than at launch.

The twill, a diagonally woven fabric, gives the shorts structure and durability: Colorful Standard, a brand founded in Copenhagen in 2017, makes them in organic cotton in natural shades like sand or ivory. Katin, born in California in the fifties as a boat cover workshop before stitching its first surf shorts, produces the Cord Local in soft, structured corduroy, and the Ward. Ragwear, a German brand with vegan collections, offers lightweight canvas shorts, while the New Era Essentials features an oversized cut inspired by sportswear.
The Helly Hansen HP shorts, developed with professional sailors, are made from a stretchy, water-repellent fabric that dries quickly and protects against UV rays; the HP Racing Deck adds reinforcements to the butt and knees, areas that rub against the deck. For running, the Endurance shorts focus on a lightweight fabric and a free fit, with a two-in-one model combining a loose short with an integrated inner short that reduces chafing between the thighs. The Hummel Blaze, made from soft mesh, bridges training and daily wear, like the more technical cut of the Oakley Perf Utility short.
The length is measured at the inseam: a short that stops mid-thigh elongates the leg and is great for shorter men; a length just above the knee remains the most versatile; the bermuda, reaching the knee, balances out taller silhouettes. In terms of cut, a straight, fitted model on the thigh gives a clean look, while a loose or oversized fit, like the New Era, offers a more relaxed vibe. The shorts should sit on the hips without a belt, with a waistband that doesn’t sag: you should choose your usual trouser size and check while sitting that there’s room at the thigh.
Fold it in half lengthwise, pockets inside, then roll it from the waistband down. When rolled, it takes up less space and creases less than a flat-folded short, especially in lightweight cotton.
Wash them at thirty degrees, inside out, and avoid the tumble dryer, which is the main cause of cotton shrinkage. Air drying on a hanger also reduces creases and makes ironing easier.
Linen, which is more breathable and absorbent, stays cooler in hot weather but wrinkles easily. Cotton, which is more durable and easier to care for, is great for everyday wear; lightweight canvas or fine twill maintains good breathability.
Iron them inside out, slightly damp, with the iron set to cotton temperature, starting with the waistband and pockets. A quick pass on the outside with a damp cloth revives the crease without shining up the fabric.
Choose a straight cut, neither too loose nor too long, in a sober colour like khaki, sand, or navy. The side pockets should stay relatively empty, otherwise, they distort the silhouette.
