A stick governed by rules

The hockey stick for field hockey follows strict regulations set by the international federation. Its flat face is only on the left side, meaning both left-handed and right-handed players use the same model. It must fit through a ring with an inner diameter of 51 millimeters and not exceed 737 grams. The length, measured in inches, is chosen according to the player's height: when placed vertically, it generally reaches hip height. The children's stick The Indian Maharadja Yuki, which is shorter and lighter, helps learn ball control without straining. The sac for the children's stick CSX, carried over the shoulder, protects the stick during transport to the pitch.

Shin guards, gloves and masks against a hard ball

The hockey ball, solid and hard, weighs between 156 and 163 grams and can exceed one hundred kilometres per hour on a powerful hit. Shin guards are therefore essential: the Grays G900 or The Indian Maharadja Pro combine a hard shell and cushioning foam, while kids' models like the Y40JR fit under the sock. The glove, mainly worn on the left hand that holds the top of the stick, protects fingers from the opposing stick and the ball, such as the anatomical glove Grays. During a penalty corner, defenders can wear a facial mask, like the one from Grays, which they remove as soon as the action ends.

Studded shoes for wet synthetic surfaces

Hockey is now played almost everywhere on synthetic grass, either wet or sanded depending on the pitch. The hockey shoe features a sole with short spikes made of rubber, which grip these surfaces without damaging them, and a reinforced toe to protect against stick and ball impacts. The adidas Adizero Lux focuses on lightweight performance, the Adipower on support, and the Fabela, designed for female players, on a female foot shape. The Mizuno Wave Panthera includes the brand's Wave plate, which cushions and stabilises during foot pressure. For kids, the Hummel Topflight Pro comes with laces or a Velcro closure, making it easier to put on by themselves.

Grays and The Indian Maharadja, two stories of hockey

Modern field hockey was structured in England in the nineteenth century, before being added to the Olympic programme in 1908 for men and in 1980 for women. India, then the Netherlands, Australia, Germany and Belgium took turns dominating the sport. Grays, an English company founded in Cambridge in 1855, is among the oldest sports equipment manufacturers still in operation, offering sticks, gloves, shin guards and masks. The Indian Maharadja, a Dutch brand born in Amsterdam in 2009, whose name pays tribute to India, has made hockey a stylish world, with colourful sticks and matching bags for young players.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between field hockey and indoor hockey?

Indoor hockey is played six against six on a smaller pitch bordered by boards, using thinner and lighter sticks. The ball must stay on the ground and striking is forbidden: players only push the ball.

Is a mouthguard needed for field hockey?

Yes, it is highly recommended at all ages, as a ball or lifted stick can hit the face. A thermoformed mouthguard, moulded in hot water to fit one’s teeth, stays in place better and allows normal breathing and speaking.

How do you choose the curve of a stick?

The curve of the shaft, limited to twenty-five millimetres by regulation, influences gameplay. A regular curve makes it easier for beginners to control and pass, while a low curve helps lift the ball and suits technical players who practice flicking.

Carbon or wooden stick for beginners?

A stick rich in carbon is stiffer and strikes harder but it transmits more vibrations and is less forgiving. For beginners or for a child, a wooden stick or one with low carbon content enables better ball contact.

How do you maintain a hockey stick?

Wipe the stick after each match on wet ground and let it dry outside the sac. The grip should be replaced as soon as it slips, and tape on the head protects against repeated impacts from the ball and opposing sticks.
