Comfort and grip in the saddle, at reduced prices.

Leggings or trousers: two styles in the saddle

The equestrian legging has become a staple for female riders in daily training. Tailored from a fine and highly stretchy fabric, with no pockets or loops, it hugs the leg like a second skin, featuring a wide elastic waistband that doesn’t dig in. The eaSt Reggings, Ariat Eos, Euro-Star Ares, Horze Ginny, and Harry's Horse Equitights all follow this principle, with full grip. The classic trousers, like the ELT Fenja, Cavallo Cayenne and Charlet, or Equiline Crystalek, made from more structured fabric, retain zip fly, loops and pockets: they remain suitable for lessons, club outings, and, in white, for competitions.

High waist, low waist: the question of support

The waist height affects comfort in the saddle just as much as style. A high waist, like that of many leggings, supports the belly and does not reveal the lower back when the rider leans forward, in suspension over the jump or at a gallop in balance. The mid-rise waist, the most common on trousers, allows more freedom at the torso and is worn with a belt. Low-rise models, which are rarer, suit figures that cannot tolerate pressure on the stomach. For plus sizes, a wide and stretchy belt without a narrow elastic that digs in helps avoid marks after several hours in the saddle.

Thermal trousers for riding in winter

When the arena is frozen, a thermal trouser makes a difference. Its inner layer is brushed or lined, like the B Vertigo Dana or Horze Anya, to trap a layer of warm air against the skin, while the outer layer remains smooth to prevent catching on the saddle. The Horze Greta, thermal legging with full grip, adds grip that also covers the rear: it limits slips when the thickness of the fabric reduces sensations. These models are worn without tights underneath, preventing wrinkling at the knee. In spring, we switch back to lighter and breathable fabric, as lined trousers become too hot once the thermometer rises.

Choosing the size of a rider’s trousers

Equestrian brands follow different size charts: French, German or Italian sizes, and inches for American jeans like the Ariat R.E.A.L. So, start with your measurements, waist and hip circumferences, then check the brand's guide. Equestrian trousers are worn close-fitting: the stretchy fabric relaxes slightly with use, and an overly loose model would create wrinkles inside the knee. To check the length, sit down, leg bent as if in the saddle: the hem should not rise above the ankle. Riders between sizes often lean towards leggings, which are more forgiving.

Frequently asked questions

What equestrian trousers should I choose to start?

A full grip legging, comfortable and easy to slip on, is great for beginners: it offers confidence in the saddle and withstands frequent washing. There's no need to invest in competition trousers before riding in competitions.

Is white mandatory in competitions for a female rider?

Competition rules generally require light, white or beige attire. The ELT Fun Sport, full grip competition trousers, meets this requirement; for training, a dark colour is much more practical for everyday wear.

How do I wash equestrian leggings without damaging the grip?

Turn them inside out, wash them at thirty degrees on a delicate cycle, and avoid fabric softeners, which damage the silicone and the elasticity of the fabric. Dry them flat or on a drying rack, away from a radiator.

Can equestrian trousers be worn outside the stables?

Equestrian jeans, like the Ariat R.E.A.L., and plain trousers without obvious grip transition easily into town. Full grip leggings, being very technical, are better kept for the stable, as their silicone patterns make them less discreet.

What equestrian trousers are suitable for a teenager?

Small women’s sizes are suitable for teenagers once their shape starts to slim down. A stretchy legging adapts better to rapid growth than structured trousers, and length should be checked with every new season.
