The Black Friday running hydration packs and belts gather what the runner carries to drink and store the essentials: Patagonia Slope Runner vests and Asics Performance, flask belts Coxa Carry, Asics and Nike, slim belts Oxsitis, Brooks and Sammie, and bib belts Mako, Z3R0D and Fitletic. Models selected to stay stable on the road as well as on trails.
Run long, carrying the essentials.
The choice of carrying depends first on the duration of the outing and the amount of water to bring. A thin belt, without a flask, is enough for a one-hour jog where you only take your phone, keys, and a gel. As the outing gets longer, the flask belt, like the Asics Fujitrail or the models from Coxa Carry, a Swedish brand founded in 2012 whose name comes from the Latin coxa, meaning hip, places the load on the pelvis, where it interferes the least with your stride. Beyond two hours, or in the mountains, the hydration vest takes over: it distributes the weight across the upper back and chest, with flasks within reach at the front and a back pocket for a jacket and supplies.
Running accessories for Black Friday also come in various types:
All accessories are gathered on the accessories page.
In trail running, the vest is not just about comfort: organisers often impose a list of mandatory equipment, checked at the start or during the race. The rules of the UTMB, for example, require resealable containers for at least one litre of water, a personal cup, a waterproof jacket, and a survival blanket. The Patagonia Slope Runner and the Asics Performance are cut like fitted clothing, with adjustable chest straps that prevent the bag from bouncing during descents. You choose it based on your chest size, then adjust it while loaded, with full flasks: a well-fitted vest when empty floats often once filled.
The number bib belt fixes the race number on an elastic strap with two attachments, without pins that pierce the top. In triathlon, it becomes almost essential: you put it on as you leave the bike park, and the rules generally require the bib on your back for cycling and at the front for running, which a simple pivot of the belt allows. Z3R0D, a French brand created by former triathletes, and Mako offer minimalist versions, barely wider than an elastic band. The Fitletic model adds six loops for energy gels, handy during a half marathon or marathon, when you want to fuel at regular intervals without carrying a pocket.
To run in the city or on a known route, the thin belt is a great alternative to a short pocket. The Oxsitis Slimbelt, from the French trail brand, distributes several compartments around the waist, preventing weight from concentrating in one spot. The Brooks Cascadia and the Sammie City, made of stretch fabric, sit against the body and keep the phone pressed against the hips. The banana bags Nike Challenger and Tempo, with an adjustable strap, are suitable for those who prefer a more structured zipped pocket. In all cases, tighten the strap at the hips rather than the waist, so the belt doesn’t ride up over the kilometres.
The soft flask fills quickly at aid stations, allows you to control what you drink, and collapses as it empties. The water bladder, located in the back, carries more volume and can be drunk through a hose, but it is less easy to refill during a race.
Vests are adjustable, but the chest alters the ideal position of the flasks and straps. Several manufacturers therefore offer women's cuts, which are shorter and have straps placed differently: when trying it on, nothing should compress or rub.
Position it on the hips, tightly secured, and distribute the weight evenly across the body. A belt with two symmetrical flasks is more stable than a single-bottle model, which tends to pivot when full.
Rinse them with hot water after each outing, especially after a sugary drink, then let them dry with the cap open. A drop of dish soap or a cleaning tablet, occasionally, helps prevent a plastic taste and deposits.
For short distances in children's races, a small belt with a lightweight flask is more than enough. Adult vests are too long for their torso: if one is needed, take the smallest size and check it doesn’t bounce.
