The Forerunner is Garmin's historical range for runners. The brand, founded in 1989 by Gary Burrell and Min Kao, whose first names formed the name Garmin, launched the first Forerunner in 2003, pioneering wrist GPS training watches. Current models measure pace, distance and heart rate on the wrist, and estimate maximum oxygen consumption. The entry-level version, with an AMOLED screen, covers the essentials and offers guided workouts. Higher-end models add multiband GPS, which is more accurate in cities and under trees, and charging indicators to prepare for a marathon.
Running accessories for Black Friday are also varied:
All accessories are collected on the accessories page.
For trails, three ranges stand out. The Instinct focuses on durability: reinforced polymer case, tested to an American military standard for shock, heat, and water, and a screen readable in bright sunlight. The fēnix, high-end multisport, combines a metal case, sapphire glass on certain versions, topographic mapping, and an integrated flashlight on larger Pro models. The Enduro, designed for ultra-trail, prioritizes extraordinary battery life in GPS mode, allowing for multiple nights of running without recharging. All feature physical buttons, which are more reliable than a touchscreen with gloves or in the rain.
The Solar versions incorporate a lens under the glass that captures light and extends battery life with every outdoor outing: on a long summer trail, the watch partially recharges during the effort. They don't eliminate the need for a charger, but they space out the recharges. The case size, expressed in millimeters, is chosen according to the wrist: smaller diameters, around forty millimeters, suit slender wrists and are barely noticeable at night, when the watch tracks sleep. Larger cases offer a more readable screen and a bigger battery, thus providing better battery life for long events.
The QuickFit bands attach and detach without tools: you snap the band into the case with a push of your thumb. This allows you to switch between a silicone band, perfect for running as it doesn't hold sweat or water, and a smarter band for the office. The Quick Release bands use a small spring-loaded pin with a notch that you pull with your fingernail. Before buying, check the width compatible with your model, indicated in millimeters on the technical sheet. A silicone band can be rinsed with clear water after each outing to avoid irritation.
Most Garmin sports watches are rated for at least five ATM, which is equivalent to a pressure of fifty meters deep, allowing for swimming in a pool and open water. However, avoid saunas and hot water jets.
Install the Garmin Connect app, enable Bluetooth, then follow the guided pairing from the watch. Activities, software updates, and training plans then automatically transfer between the two devices.
The optical sensor on the wrist is reliable for fundamental endurance, but it can drop out during short sprints or in extreme cold. For more accurate data, a compatible chest heart rate strap can connect to the watch.
Battery life depends on the model and usage: several days to several weeks in watch mode, from a few dozen to over a hundred hours in GPS mode. Multiband GPS, music, and always-on display significantly reduce it.
Yes, with Music versions and high-end models that store tracks or playlists from compatible services. You just need to pair Bluetooth headphones to run while leaving your phone at home.
