The weight of a glove is expressed in ounces, and it depends on both the use and the morphology. For the bag and bear paws, a glove weighing ten or twelve ounces is enough for most practitioners. For sparring, we typically go up to fourteen or sixteen ounces: the thicker padding protects both the partner and the wearer’s hands. Smaller sizes often start with eight or ten ounces, while heavyweight boxers train with sixteen. In amateur competitions, the weight is set by the regulations according to the weight category: it's best to check with your club before buying a pair intended for fights.
Combat sports at Black Friday are also varied:

Velcro is predominant in training: you can put on and tighten your glove on your own in a matter of seconds, like on Metal Boxe, Twins Special BGVL, or Kwon. Lacing fits the wrist better but requires a partner's help; it’s mostly reserved for fights. As for the material, leather, like on Leone Shock and DNA, gradually molds to your hand, breathes, and lasts for years: Leone, a Milanese manufacturer founded in 1947, has equipped generations of Italian boxers. Synthetic gloves, lighter on the wallet and easy to wipe down, work well for beginners, like the Metal Boxe Starter glove.
The glove for thai boxing stands out at first glance: flatter on top, with a softer palm and a shorter wrist, it allows the hand to open for grappling and to adopt a high guard against kicks. The glove for English boxing, which is more rounded, focuses the padding on the knuckles and tightens the wrist more for punches. Twins Special, a Thai manufacturer founded in 1992 near Bangkok, and 8 Weapons Sak Yant, decorated with designs of sacred Thai tattoos, are references in muay-thai gyms, alongside Kwon and Booster.
Women's gloves, like the introductory model Metal Boxe, from the well-known French brand in gyms, are made on a narrower hand, with a thinner wrist that prevents the glove from twisting upon impact. For children, gloves typically range from four to eight ounces based on age, light enough not to tire a young boxer's shoulder: the Benlee Chakar kit and Twins Special kids’ gloves are good examples. It’s better to avoid buying large to make them last longer: an oversized glove doesn’t protect the hand well. Properly fitted, it should close without gaps at the wrist, with the fingers touching the end without being cramped.
A synthetic Velcro glove weighing ten to twelve ounces is suitable for most adult beginners, for use with both the bag and for initial two-person drills. There's no need to invest in leather before committing to boxing.
After each session, open the Velcro fully and let the gloves air dry, away from radiators. Wipe the inside with a cloth and a bit of diluted white vinegar or a disinfectant spray to limit odours.
Yes, many boxers use them without issue during training. Their soft palm and flatter shape offer slightly less protection for the knuckles on the bag, but they are still suitable for technical drills and light sparring.
The bag glove, which is firmer, withstands thousands of strikes on a hard surface. The sparring glove, thicker and softer, absorbs hits taken by the partner. Having two pairs extends the lifespan of each.
A worn-out glove can be identified by its flattened foam, the sensation of feeling the knuckles upon impact, and a torn interior lining. At this stage, it offers poor protection for both the hand and the partner: it needs to be replaced.
