This selection of martial arts kimonos outfits judokas, karatekas, taekwondo practitioners, and aikidokas: federationally certified judogis Mizuno, karategis Mizuno and Metal Boxe, doboks adidas and Kwon, aikido kimonos, karate pants, self-defence and kung-fu pants. Outfits for adults and children, from beginner classes to competition.

The right outfit for each martial art.

Judogi: a thick weave to withstand grabs

The judo gi, or judogi, must withstand grabs at the collar and sleeves: its jacket is tightly woven, made from thick cotton, with reinforced shoulders, and the trousers are often lined at the knees. Judo was founded by Jigoro Kano in 1882, in Tokyo, and its white uniform became established along with it. The Mizuno Keiko and Hayato, made of cotton, are suitable for regular training for adults. The Mizuno Shiro Plus and Komodo Plus, designed for children, bear the label of the French judo federation, which is required in some competitions. The Metal Boxe Evolution, lighter, accompanies complete beginners during their first years.

Other combat sports

The combat sports for Black Friday are also varied:

All combat sports are gathered on the combat sports page.

Karategi: light for the speed of techniques

The karategi is lighter than the judogi, as the karateka strikes more than they grab: the fabric needs to keep up with the speed of punches and kicks. The Mizuno models bear names from dojo vocabulary: Shodan refers to the first dan, that of the black belt, and Kiai is the shout that accompanies the technique. The polyester and cotton blend of the Kiai dries quickly and wrinkles little, while pure cotton maintains a stiffer shape that makes the sleeves snap. The Metal Boxe club is suitable for indoor classes. The Kwon Traditional trousers, made of eight ounce fabric, and the Mizuno Toshi allow for replacing just the bottoms, which often wear out faster than the jacket.

Dobok, aikido kimono and kung fu trousers

The dobok in taekwondo is distinguished by its V-neck jacket, which is usually pulled over the head on most models. The collar color indicates the rank: white for colored belts, black for adult black belts, and red and black for young holders of a poom rank, under fifteen, like the Kwon Victory Poom. The adidas Adi Start and Champion, along with the Kwon Victory and Starfighter, cover both initiation and competition. The aikido kimono Metal Boxe, reinforced, withstands repeated falls and throws. The kung fu trousers Danrho, spacious, and the self-defense trousers Kwon, made of twelve ounce fabric, complete the range.

Size and washing: anticipating cotton shrinkage

The size of a kimono is expressed in centimetres, based on the height of the practitioner: a child who is 1.32 meters tall generally wears a 130 or 140 depending on their build, and each brand publishes its size chart. Cotton shrinks in the first wash, sometimes by several centimetres in the sleeves and pants: when in doubt, choose the next size up and wash the kimono before having the hems adjusted. Models made of polyester and cotton, like the Mizuno Kiai, move much less. Then wash at thirty degrees, without fabric softener, and air dry. The Black Friday falls in the first quarter of the sporting season, when children have often grown since the start of school.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do Muay Thai in a kimono?

No, Thai boxing is practiced in shorts, without a kimono. The kimono belongs to Japanese, Korean, and Chinese martial arts, and some self-defense courses require wearing robust fabric trousers, like the self-defense trousers Kwon.

Why do some judokas wear a blue kimono?

The blue judogi was introduced by the International Judo Federation in the late 1990s to distinguish the two fighters in international competitions. In clubs and most regional tournaments, white remains the standard.

Can you wear a t-shirt under your kimono?

In judo, women wear a white t-shirt under the jacket, as required by competition rules. Men typically do not wear one in competition; at practice, it depends on the club and instructor's habits.

How to tie a kimono belt?

Place the middle of the belt on your stomach, cross the two ends at your back, then bring them to the front to make a flat knot. The two ends should hang down to the same length, about fifteen centimetres.

Do you need to iron a karate gi?

It is not necessary for training: hung on a hanger right after coming out of the machine, it will smooth out as it dries. For a grading or a competition, a quick iron at cotton temperature on the jacket will give a sharper look.
