The lightness of summer with every step.
The espadrille originated in the Pyrenees, on both sides of the French-Spanish border, where farmers have been wearing them for centuries. Its braided jute sole and canvas upper make it a light and breathable shoe. In France, the town of Mauléon in the Basque Country is its historic capital; in Spain, it is called alpargata, a name taken by Toms for its flagship model.

The American brand Toms popularised the slip-on espadrille worldwide with its Alpargata, inspired by Argentine shoes, available in canvas, Moroccan crochet, or in a Rope version with an exposed rope sole. The Valencia and Carolina, dressier options, fasten at the ankle. The Birkenstock Callan, made of suede, captures the spirit of the espadrille with the comfort of the German brand.
The wedge espadrille, like the Ilse Jacobsen Hornbæk Tulip from the Danish brand, elongates the silhouette without the instability of a heel. The flat models, like those from Odaje, Unisa, or Lasocki, accompany long walking days. You should avoid getting the jute wet, as it deforms, and clean the canvas with a soft brush and soapy water.
Good deals can also be found in good deals, promotions, clearance, sales, and Black Friday. The new arrivals showcase the latest collections, and the items shipped in 24h are prepared and sent within 24 hours. The key events of the year follow a stable order: Black Friday in late autumn, the holiday season, the winter sales, the French Days in spring, followed by summer sales and back-to-school.
They should be cleaned by hand, with a soft brush and lukewarm soapy water, avoiding soaking the jute sole, as it deforms and can mould. They should air dry, in the shade, stuffed with paper to maintain their shape.
The canvas espadrille stretches a bit when worn: if you're between two sizes, the smaller one is often the right choice. The leather models, which are firmer, should be chosen in your usual size.
A moderate height wedge distributes weight across the entire sole, making it much more comfortable than a thin heel. Platform models, like the Ilse Jacobsen Hornbæk Tulip, provide height on a wide and stable base.
The laces cross over the instep, wrap once or twice around the ankle, and then are tied on the side or at the back. You should tighten them enough to hold the heel in the shoe without compressing the ankle.
Alpargata is the name for espadrille in Spanish. Toms adopted it for its iconic model, inspired by the canvas alpargatas that its founder discovered in Argentina: a lightweight shoe with a soft sole.
