The mouthguard, the fighter's first line of defence

The mouthguard is the only protection that stays on from the first warm-up to the last round: it protects the teeth, but also the jaw and lips, by distributing the force of an impact. The thermoformable models, like Opro or Safejawz, mould to your teeth: you soften them in hot water, then bite down so they take your impression. Opro, a British brand founded by a sports dentist, is the official licensed mouthguard of the UFC, which is why there's the Opro UFC range. Safejawz offers designs featuring superhero colours, like Captain America, and the Kwon for kids adapts to growing jaws.

Knee pads and elbow pads for ground work

In MMA, a large part of the fight takes place on the ground: knees and elbows rub against the mat, taking impacts and guard passes. The knee pads made from neoprene, such as those from Metal Boxe or RDX, keep the joints warm, support them and cushion impacts; they also protect the skin from mat burns. The neoprene elbow pad from Metal Boxe offers the same protection for the elbow, which is very exposed during guard defences and falls. These protections slip on like sleeves: you choose them based on the circumference of the knee or elbow, tight enough to stay in place during grappling.

Shin guards with foot protection for sparring

The shin guard with foot protection, like the Metal Boxe MMA Legacy, covers both the shin and the foot in one piece: it absorbs kicks and blocks during sparring, protecting both the partner and the wearer. For MMA, it's preferable to have it soft and slim, held in place by Velcro straps or an elastic sleeve, so it doesn't shift during ground passes and leg locks. Bulkier models, designed solely for striking while standing, hinder grappling. The shin guard is chosen according to the length of the shin, measured from below the knee to the ankle.

Amateur regulations, maintenance and hygiene

In France, MMA has been legal in competitions since 1 January 2020, under the French Boxing Federation, which oversees amateur practice. Amateur regulations require a mouthguard and a groin guard, and often shin guards depending on the level: check the rules of your league before your first fight. Regarding hygiene, rinse the mouthguard with cold water after each session and store it in its ventilated box, away from heat that could distort it. Knee and elbow pads in neoprene should be hand-washed in soapy water and dried flat, never in direct sunlight.

Frequently asked questions

When should you change your mouthguard?

Replace it as soon as it's cracked, thin from bites or no longer staying in place. A child will need to change it more often as their teeth develop and the mould soon stops fitting.

Is a helmet necessary for training in MMA?

A helmet is not mandatory during training, but it's advised during standing sparring to limit cuts and impacts. Some amateur regulations require it for younger categories.

What protections are needed for a child practicing MMA?

A mouthguard that fits, like the Kwon for kids, a groin guard, shin guards and knee pads are enough to get started. Clubs supervise younger ones with very limited contact.

Why wear a groin guard in MMA?

Knees and kicks can strike the groin, whether on the ground or standing. The groin guard, required in amateur competitions, protects this area and is worn under the shorts in a suitable supporter.

Single or double mouthguard for MMA?

The single mouthguard, which covers the upper arch, is the standard in MMA: it allows for breathing during effort and remains comfortable on the ground. The double model, bulkier, can make breathing difficult during long exchanges.
