The off-road helmet, like the Leatt carbon model, is recognised by its forward chin guard, which allows air to flow when exerting effort, and its visor that blocks sunlight and debris. It doesn't have a face shield: it's worn with goggles, like the Shot Assault, Shot Iris or UP Design, which are waterproof around the eyes and have replaceable lenses to adapt to light conditions, from clear to mirrored. The vest Leatt Protector AirFit protects the back, chest, and shoulders from falls and stones kicked up by the front wheel. Leatt was founded in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2004, by surgeon Chris Leatt, who designed a neck brace to reduce neck injuries.

The off-road boots, like the Gaerne Fastback Endurance, rise high on the shin and secure the ankle with buckles, to absorb landings and impacts against rocks. Gaerne, founded in 1962 near Treviso by shoemaker Ernesto Gazzola, made this its specialty from the seventies. The gloves for off-road use are kept thin to maintain feel on the lever: the Five E2, Shot Core or Kenny Titanium gloves, with D3O shells that harden on impact, protect the knuckles. Young riders can find Troy Lee Designs Air Richter in kids' sizes. For trail riding, waterproof boots like the RST Adventure, which are more flexible, allow for walking at the campsite.
The trail combines asphalt and tracks: the gear needs to be suitable for both without changing outfits. The Arai Tour-X combines the visor of an off-road helmet, which protects against sunlight and debris, with the face shield of a road helmet, which cuts wind during long rides. The multiclayer jackets Furygan Voyager and Brevent, as well as the Ixon Midgard, are worn from spring to autumn, adding or removing their inner layers according to the temperature. They pair well with waterproof boots for river crossings and rain. On long track days, their zip vents release heat during slow passages where air circulation is minimal.
The handlebar is chosen based on its bend, which determines the height and setback of the hands: the Protaper SE, made from aluminium, comes in various shapes, including the Raptor bend. The foam Protaper Stealth, designed for handlebars without a crossbar, protects the rider in case of a shock against the center of the handlebar. The grips Odi Ruffian, semi-grooved, and Domino, with open or closed ends, are chosen based on the desired firmness and grip; the UP Design Holeshot grips lock in place with a collar, without glue. The starting hook Protaper Sela compresses the fork on the line to lower the front and limit wheelies at the start.
Motocross is raced on a closed dirt circuit, consisting of jumps and banked turns. Enduro combines connections with timed special stages on trails, with a road-legal motorcycle. Trail refers to versatile motorcycles designed for both road and track travel.
Measure the head circumference above the eyebrows and refer to the brand's size guide. The helmet should fit snugly against the cheeks without creating pressure points and should not shift when shaking the head; the padding compresses slightly with use.
A neck brace is not mandatory for recreational use, but it limits extreme head movements during a fall and reduces the risk of cervical injury. It should be worn with a compatible vest and adjusted according to the rider's build.
Rinse off mud with a gentle spray, avoiding the seams, then let them dry away from a heat source. Grease the buckles, check the sole for wear, and replace it when it is smooth, for models that allow it.
A helmet, goggles, gloves, high boots and chest protection make up the basics. Add knee pads and long-sleeved shirts to limit scrapes during the early falls, which are common while learning.
