Hard luggage offers the best protection for your belongings: waterproof and lockable, it keeps things safe during a break. The top case, like the Shad carbon-finish one, is mounted on a plate fixed to the luggage rack and often holds a full-face helmet; the backrest Givi, placed on the brand's top case, supports the passenger's back. The side cases Shad, mounted on a specific support for each motorbike, like that of the Honda Hornet, keep the load low and centred to preserve handling. Shad is the brand of the Spanish company NAD, founded near Barcelona in 1973, which initially made motorcycle seats.

The tank bag keeps documents, phone and gloves within reach, often featuring a transparent pocket to follow the route. Its attachment depends on the tank. Bagster, a brand from Normandy established in 1984 and known for its tank pads, connects its bags to the tank using Tab hooks, and offers the Puppy for transporting a small dog. Givi has its Tanklock system, with a strap specific to each motorbike model mounted around the cap: the bag can be removed in one motion when refuelling. SW-Motech completes the range with the Daypack. Magnetic bags, simpler, only fit on a steel tank.
Without support or plate, soft luggage can be fitted on most bikes. The seat bag SW-Motech Rearbag, with expandable volume, is secured to the passenger seat and holds the equivalent of a weekend bag; the universal support Bagster Easy Trail allows you to fit bags on a trail bike. The leg bag, like the Givi Easy-T, the Ixon R-Emington or the Furygan Colt, is worn on the thigh to keep keys, wallet and phone handy. The straps Protaper and handlebar slings Acebikes are used to secure the bike on a trailer or in a van without marking the handlebar.
The backpack airbag combines luggage and protection: in case of a fall, a cushion inflates in a fraction of a second to protect the back, neck and chest. Helite, a French company founded in 2002 by engineer Gérard Thevenot, offers its H-Moov in a mechanical version, connected to the bike by a clip that triggers inflation, and in an electronic version, which detects the fall without a clip. The helmet bag Arai protects the shell and visor from shocks during transport. For everyday use, the backpacks Ixon, designed for riding, accompany daily journeys, including a laptop and rain gear.
The top case, rigid and lockable, keeps a helmet and computer safe in the parking. The seat bag, lighter, can be removed in the evening but needs to be emptied at every long stop. For everyday use, the top case is the most practical.
It is indicated on the plate and in the manual, and must not exceed that of the luggage rack specified by the manufacturer of the motorbike. A load that is too heavy at the back lightens the front and makes steering unstable at high speeds.
Soft luggage, being lighter, better absorbs falls on track and is easily repaired, hence its popularity among trail riders who leave the asphalt. On the road, hard cases maintain the advantage of waterproofing and safety.
It also protects the back, neck and chest, while serving as a bag for trips. The vest, worn under or over the jacket, remains lighter when there’s nothing to carry. In both cases, the cartridge is replaced after deployment.
Use the rain cover provided with most soft bags, and store clothes and documents in waterproof bags inside. Zippers are a weak point: a flap or waterproof closure limits infiltration.
