The swim cap protects hair from chlorine, keeps it out of the eyes and reduces drag. Silicone, thick and stretchy, doesn’t pull on hair and lasts a long time: the moulded caps Speedo and Arena, or the Tremblay cap, are suitable for regular swimmers. Latex, thinner and lighter, fits snugly on the head, but tears faster and is not suitable for people with allergies. Fabric, made from polyester or lycra, like the Arena Polyester, is the most comfortable and easiest to put on, but lets water in: it’s the cap for kids and leisure swimmers. These end-of-line items are not restocked.

The moulded cap, shaped in three dimensions rather than cut flat, fits the shape of the head without creases: water glides over it without creating turbulence. The moulded caps Speedo and the Arena Pro, made from thick silicone, are examples. Many competitors layer two caps, a latex cap underneath and a moulded cap on top, for a perfect fit. Arena, created in 1973 by Horst Dassler, son of the founder of adidas, after Mark Spitz’s seven gold medals in Munich, and Speedo, founded in Australia in 1914 and named in 1928, have been equipping competitive swimmers for decades.
Flip-flops prevent walking barefoot on poolside and in changing rooms, where fungi and plantar warts can spread. Their soft, textured sole grips wet tiles and reduces slipping. The adidas Adilette Shower, with a single strap, rinse and dry in minutes; the flip-flops H2O and Puma follow the same principle. For children, the closed-back adidas Altaswim sandals hold the foot better and prevent losing a shoe while walking at the pool’s edge. They should be rinsed with clean water after each session to remove chlorine.
The swimming mats Softee, made of floating foam, serve as a play area during baby swim and water awareness sessions. The child climbs on it, lies down, sits or crawls across it: they become familiar with water, balance, and immersion without fear. The circular mat creates a central island around which games are organised, while the perforated model holds foam noodles to build bridges and pathways. Lifeguards also use them to teach children how to get out of the water on their own. After the session, rinse it and let it dry flat in the shade.
In most public swimming pools in France, yes: the rules require it to limit hair in the water and clogging of filters. Check with your pool, as some only require it for long hair.
Wet your hair, then hold the cap open with both hands slipped inside before placing it from your forehead to the nape. Tuck in any strands that stick out without pulling on the edge.
Choose a roomy silicone cap or one designed for long hair, with extra volume at the back. Tie your hair in a low bun before putting it on to keep it in place during the session.
Yes, choose your regular size: your heel shouldn't hang over the sole. If between sizes, go for the larger one, as they are worn barefoot and wet, which can make your foot slide forward.
Rinse it with clean water after each session, dry it well and sprinkle a bit of talcum powder so its sides don’t stick together. Store it away from sunlight and heat, as they can weaken the latex.
