Private sales of boxing shorts bring together, for a limited time, fighting shorts designed for each discipline: English boxing from adidas and Metal Boxe, satin Thai boxing from King Pro Boxing and Metal Boxe, kickboxing, MMA from Fightnature, and pocketed shell models. Length, waistband, and slits vary from one style to another.

The English boxing shorts come down to just above the knee and rise high on the waist, featuring a wide elastic waistband. This waistband marks the area below which strikes are not allowed: the referee must see it clearly, which is why it often contrasts with the rest of the shorts. In amateur boxing, each boxer wears the colour of their corner, red or blue. The adidas Aiba shorts, named after the former international amateur boxing federation, follow these codes, like the Metal Boxe Pro Line in Military version or the Water model. During the private sales, it’s a good opportunity to plan for one pair for training and another for competitions.

The Thai boxing shorts are short, very flared and slit on the sides: they allow the thighs to move freely for circular kicks, knee strikes, and the clinch. Traditionally made from shiny satin, they feature Thai script inscriptions and embroidery on the waistband that are part of the identity of muay-thai. The King Pro Boxing Demon and the Metal Boxe Lumpunee, named after the famous stadium in Bangkok, carry on this style. The very wide waistband can be adjusted with a cord or thick elastic that stays in place during intense exchanges.
The kickboxing shorts, like the Metal Boxe Mirror or the Thai/Kick Extrem, borrow their side slits from Thai shorts but often keep a slightly longer length, suited for a discipline that combines punches and kicks. The MMA shorts, like those from Fightnature, come down to mid-thigh or knee; they are stretchy, often secured with velcro and lacing, and avoid buttons and pockets that could cause injuries on the ground. The Joma Combat, slit at the sides, is designed for striking sports. For safety, the Metal Boxe Oko integrates a pocket for a cup, which keeps the protection in place during jumps and movements.
The size of boxing shorts corresponds to the waist measurement, taken at the level of the navel, since the waistband rises higher than a standard pair of shorts. Thai shorts made to Asian measurements tend to run small: it’s advisable to go up a size if unsure between two sizes. For MMA, it’s also important to check the thigh measurement, as shorts that are too tight can hinder dodges and sprawls. For children, sizes are given by age or in centimeters, and a drawstring allows you to keep the same shorts for an additional year. Once selected, they should be washed in cold water and inside out to protect the satin, embroidery and elastic.
Women's models, often shorter, have a waistband suited to the waist and a cut that follows the hips. In Thai boxing, many women also wear unisex shorts in small sizes, as long as the waistband doesn’t sag during kicks.
During training, there’s nothing to stop you. In competitions, regulations require a uniform specific to the discipline, with a waistband that clearly marks the striking line: an English boxing short, longer and more covering, remains the safest choice.
Satin is lightweight, slides over the skin and dries quickly, which suits the hot climate of Thailand, where muay-thai was born. It also allows for vibrant colours and highly legible embroidery, which enhance the spectacle of the fights.
A loose pair made of polyester, with an elastic waistband and drawstring, is sufficient for the first sessions. One should choose the style according to the discipline practised at the club, whether English or Thai, and a size that allows for some room without slipping down the hips.
In Thai boxing and kickboxing, wearing a cup is strongly advised and often required in competition, as knee and kick strikes can hit low. A short with an integrated pocket or a supporter keeps it secure.
