Private sales of kimonos dress every martial art: judogis Mizuno Hayato and Keiko, karate kimonos Mizuno Kiai and Metal Boxe, aikido kimono, taekwondo doboks adidas and Kwon, capoeira, kung-fu and self-defence trousers. Children’s sizes, including several judogis certified by the French judo federation, support the youngest from their first class.

The outfit for each martial art, at a reduced price.

Judogi, karategi, dobok: a cut for each discipline

Each martial art has shaped its outfit according to its moves. The judogi has a thick jacket and reinforced collar, designed to withstand grabs and throws. The karategi, being lighter, allows arms and legs to loosen up during punches and kicks; kata models, with a stiffer fabric, create a sharp crack with each technique. The dobok used in taekwondo comes with a V-neck jacket or a crossover jacket depending on the school. Aikido uses a jacket similar to the judogi, capoeira has soft white trousers, and Kung Fu features loose trousers cuffed at the ankles.

Weight and weaving of a judo kimono

The weight, expressed in grams per square meter, describes the thickness of the fabric of a judogi. A model with single weave, light and flexible, is suitable for beginners and children: it dries quickly and is not heavy on the shoulders. The double weave, much denser, better withstands repeated pulls and makes it harder for the opponent to grab the collar: this is what competitive judokas wear. At Mizuno, the Hayato range is available in cotton and comfort versions, while the Keiko features an embroidered logo. For international competitions, the international judo federation enforces approved models, identifiable by their red label.

Children's kimono: size, growth and federal label

A children's kimono is chosen based on the child's height in centimeters, leaving a little room for growth over the year. The judogis Mizuno Shiro and Komodo are available in a FFJ branded version, recognised by the French judo federation for club practice, and the Metal Boxe evolution kimono accommodates the growth of young judokas. Cotton shrinks slightly in the first wash: a wash at thirty degrees, followed by air drying, prevents any surprises. For young taekwondo practitioners, the adidas dobok is also available in children's sizes, with the same neckline as the adult model.

Dobok, capoeira trousers and self-defence

The dobok for taekwondo adidas, in Adi-Start, Champion or Adi-Club versions, features a white collar for coloured belts; the black collar is reserved for adult black belts, and young black belts under fifteen wear a red and black collar. The capoeira trousers, white and stretchy, follow the acrobatics of this martial art that originated in Brazil among enslaved Africans, and the coloured cord tied at the waist signifies progression. The self-defence trousers Kwon, made of thick fabric, withstands falls and grabs in self-defence and jiu-jitsu.

Frequently asked questions

How to fold a judo kimono?

Lay the jacket flat, fold the sleeves over the back, then place the folded trousers lengthwise in the center. Fold the whole thing in three before tying it with the belt, just like judokas do when arriving at the dojo.

Why do some judokas wear a blue kimono?

In international competition, one of the two fighters wears a blue judogi and the other a white one, so that referees and the public can instantly tell them apart. In clubs and during grading, white remains the standard.

What is the difference between a judo kimono and a Brazilian jiu-jitsu kimono?

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu kimono looks like the judogi, but its sleeves are more fitted and its jacket is shorter, offering less grip to the opponent on the ground. Traditional jiu-jitsu is often practised in a classic judogi.

How to tie your kimono belt?

Place the middle of the belt on your stomach, wrap it around your waist twice crossing at the back, then pass the top end under the two layers before making a flat knot. The two ends should fall to the same length.

Should a karate kimono be ironed?

A polyester and cotton karategi, like the Mizuno Kiai, almost smooths itself if hung on a hanger to dry. Pure cotton models benefit from a gentle iron, on the reverse side, to maintain a sharp fall, especially before a grading.
