Bag with a drawstring, backpack or large bag: three sizes

The size of the bag depends on what you take to the gym. The drawstring bag Victor, lightweight and without compartments, is enough for a racket, a tube of shuttlecocks and a spare t-shirt during a leisure slot. The backpack Carlton Airblade adds a dedicated pocket for rackets, separate from everything else, and distributes the weight over both shoulders for cycling or public transport. The large bag Craft Transit, about sixty litres, swallows shoes, two outfits, a towel, and supplies for an all-day tournament. These end-of-line items will not be restocked once they are sold out.

Heat and cold: protecting string and frame during transport

A badminton racket weighs less than a hundred grams and its string is tensioned to around ten kilos: it does not handle temperature fluctuations well. Left in a hot car, it sees its string relax and its graphite frame weaken; in winter, the cold makes the string more brittle. A dedicated racket compartment, like that of the Carlton Airblade, isolates the racket from shoes and hard objects, protecting the frame from impacts against doors or posts. Feather shuttlecocks are sensitive to dry air: keep them in their tube, and some players lightly moisten them before a session to prevent the feathers from breaking.

Separate indoor shoes and damp clothing

After two hours of play, the outfit is soaked, and the indoor shoes need to stay clean to avoid marking the court. A good badminton bag therefore separates the dirty from the clean: a ventilated pocket for shoes, a main compartment for clothes, a small inner pocket for keys and the phone. In a drawstring bag, shoes can be slipped into a separate cover. Large bags like the Craft Transit, with a wide opening, fill up like a piece of luggage and allow you to easily see the outfit for the next match. When you get home, air out the bag with all compartments open to avoid odors.

How many rackets to take to a competition

In a tournament, a string can break mid-match: competitors therefore take at least two rackets, often three, strung to the same tension to regain the same feel. The backpack holds one or two rackets in its dedicated pocket; beyond that, a larger bag is necessary. You can add spare overgrips, a water bottle, a towel, a dry outfit for the next matches, and something to eat between rounds. Leisure players often only bring one racket and a tube of nylon shuttlecocks, and the drawstring bag is usually sufficient for them.

Frequently asked questions

Which badminton bag should I choose to start?

For one or two sessions a week, a drawstring bag or a small backpack is enough: a racket, some shuttlecocks, a bottle, and a spare outfit can all fit. The large bag only becomes useful with the first tournaments.

Can a badminton racket fit in a tennis bag?

Yes, a badminton racket measures at most sixty-eight centimeters, roughly the same as a tennis racket: it fits in a tennis bag. Slip it into its cover to protect its fine frame from other objects.

How to avoid bad smells in a sports bag?

Take out the clothes and shoes as soon as you get home, leave the bag open to let it dry, and wash the inside with a sponge from time to time. A sachet of bicarbonate placed in the shoe pocket absorbs moisture.

What size bag for a weekend tournament?

Count on at least fifty litres for two or three rackets, shoes, two outfits, a towel, and supplies. A bag that’s too small forces you to cram damp clothes against clean ones.

Do I need a cover for each racket?

An individual cover protects the frame and string from scratches and shocks, especially in a drawstring bag without compartments. In a backpack with a racket pocket, it remains useful for separating two rackets.
