From driver to putter: what each club is for

The golf rules allow a maximum of fourteen clubs in the bag, each suited for a specific distance and situation. The driver, with a low loft of nine to twelve degrees and a large head, capped at four hundred sixty cubic centimetres, is used for teeing off on long holes. Fairway woods take over on the fairway, and hybrids, halfway between woods and irons, replace the long irons, which can be tricky to get airborne. Numbered irons cover medium distances: the higher the number, the more open the face, resulting in a higher and shorter flight for the ball. Wedges are used for approaches and bunkers, while the putter is used to roll the ball on the green.

Graphite or steel: choosing your shaft and flex

The shaft influences the shot as much as the head. Graphite, being lighter, helps to gain clubhead speed: it's the choice for drivers, woods, and hybrids, like the TaylorMade equipped with Fujikura shafts, and irons for senior players or women. In steel, which is heavier and more stable, it provides consistency for players who hit hard; the Wilson Profile irons come in both versions. The flex indicates the stiffness: Lady for the slowest swings, Light or Senior, Regular for the majority of amateurs, then Stiff and Extra Stiff for fast hitters. A flex that's too stiff sends the ball low and to the right for a right-handed player.

Right-handed or left-handed, men or women: the variations

A right-handed player stands to the left of the ball and holds the club with the left hand at the top of the grip; a left-handed player does the opposite and needs clubs with the face angled the other way, like the Cleveland wedge or the Srixon wood in left-handed version. Left-handedness in golf doesn’t always follow writing habits: some lefties play right-handed, and it’s worth trying both before buying. Women’s clubs, like the Max Lite versions of the driver and TaylorMade wood, are about an inch shorter, lighter, and paired with Lady shafts, often featuring a more open loft to help launch the ball at moderate swing speeds.

Wedges and putters: the game around the green

The wedge is defined by its loft, around forty-six degrees for the pitching wedge to sixty degrees or more for the lob wedge, and by its bounce, the angle of the sole that prevents it from digging into sand or grass. The Wilson Harmonized wedge at sixty degrees lifts the ball high to clear an obstacle; the Cleveland Smart Sole line, with a very wide sole, makes it easier to get out of bunkers and for players who fear digging into the ground. The putter is chosen for its length, around thirty-four or thirty-five inches depending on height and stance, and its shape: thin blade for feel, mallet head for more stability on short putts.

Frequently asked questions

What clubs should I buy to start golf?

A half set is sufficient to learn: a wood or hybrid, two or three odd-numbered irons like seven and nine, a wedge, and a putter. You can then add clubs to your bag one by one as you discover which distances you need.

How far can you hit with each golf club?

It all depends on swing speed. For an amateur male, a seven iron often sends the ball between one hundred twenty and one hundred forty metres, and each subsequent iron adds or subtracts about ten metres; the driver typically goes over two hundred metres.

What driver should I choose when starting out?

A beginner should opt for a forgiving driver, with a large head and an open loft, around ten and a half to twelve degrees, which helps lift the ball more easily. A lightweight shaft in Regular or Light flex helps maintain a smooth swing.

What club length suits my height?

The standard length is suitable for average-height players. Beyond one metre eighty-five or below one metre sixty-five, consider extended or shortened clubs to maintain a natural stance at address.

How to maintain golf clubs?

Clean the grooves on the face with a brush after every shot on the course, then wipe and dry the heads when you return. Grips can be washed with soapy water and should be replaced when they become smooth, typically each year for a regular player.
