The clearance sale of jiu-jitsu gloves features open-fingered jiu-jitsu gloves that are end-of-line, such as the Danrho and Kwon Ladro models, designed for striking and gripping in the same fight. Padded on the knuckles and open on the fingers, they support combat jiu-jitsu, self-defence, and training sessions that combine striking and grappling, for everyone from beginners to competitors, at more affordable prices.

Strike and grip safely, for a better price.

Ju-jitsu or Brazilian jiu-jitsu: who wears gloves?

Both names can be confusing. The ju-jitsu from Japan, a martial art of the samurais, combines strikes, throws, locks and holds; its sport form, ju-jitsu combat, is fought with gloves. Brazilian jiu-jitsu, developed in Brazil in the twentieth century from judo and ju-jitsu, focuses on ground fighting, without strikes: it is practiced in a gi or grappling gear, bare-handed. The term jiu-jitsu, an old transcription of the same Japanese word, explains why the two disciplines are often confused. The gloves in this selection are meant for ju-jitsu and self-defence.

The three parts of a ju-jitsu match

The ju-jitsu combat, codified by the international ju-jitsu federation, takes place in three parts. The first combines punches and kicks, delivered in semi-contact at a distance. As soon as the fighters engage, the second begins: throws, locks and standing chokes, with no more striking. On the ground, the third part involves holds, locks and chokes. A fighter who scores an ippon in all three parts achieves a full ippon, the perfect victory. Therefore, the gloves must protect during strikes in the first part without hindering the grip of the gi in the two following parts, hence their free fingers.

Padding, loops and closure: the construction of the glove

A glove for ju-jitsu consists of a padding of foam on the back of the hand and knuckles, which absorbs the impact for both fighters, and a palm that is either open or very thin. The fingers, held by simple loops, close freely around the back or sleeve of the gi, and the thumb remains mobile for arm locks. The closure with hook-and-loop at the wrist adjusts the glove and keeps it in place during falls. Danrho, whose history dates back to 1935, when Alfred Rhode made judo jackets in Germany, and Kwon, another German martial arts specialist, design these gloves for both clubs and competition.

Choosing the size and maintaining ju-jitsu gloves

Ju-jitsu gloves generally range from S to XL: you choose based on the width of the hand, measured at the joints, checking that the padding covers all knuckles with a closed fist and that the loops do not constrict the fingers with an open hand. A glove that is too large will rotate on the hand when gripping. For maintenance, remove them from the bag right after the session, wipe the inside with a cloth and antibacterial product, then let them dry naturally, away from the radiator that can crack the synthetic coating. Storing the gloves open, with hook-and-loop detached, speeds up drying.

Frequently asked questions

Are gloves mandatory in ju-jitsu competition?

Yes, in ju-jitsu combat, gloves with free fingers are part of the required equipment along with the gi and protections outlined by the rules. Organisers sometimes specify which models or colours are allowed: it's best to check before a tournament.

Can MMA gloves be used for ju-jitsu?

MMA gloves also have free fingers, but their thicker padding and stiffer construction hinder the grip of the gi. For club training and competition, a glove for ju-jitsu, which is lighter and more flexible, is still preferable.

What is a glove for grappling?

It is a glove with free fingers, lightly padded, designed for disciplines that combine light strikes and grappling, such as ju-jitsu or certain forms of self-defence. It protects the knuckles without preventing gripping the opponent or their gi.

Are ju-jitsu gloves suitable for children?

Yes, small sizes are available for young fighters from categories where strikes are allowed. They should be chosen to fit well, as a child’s hand floats quickly in a glove that is too large and the padding no longer covers the knuckles.

How long do ju-jitsu gloves last?

With two or three sessions per week, a pair can often last several years if dried after each use. They should be replaced when the foam compresses and no longer protects the knuckles, or when the loops for the fingers tear.
