A down jacket keeps you warm thanks to its filling. Duvet, those lightweight feathers taken from under the feathers of geese or ducks, offers the best balance between warmth and weight and compresses into a small volume, but loses its loft when wet and needs to be washed with care. Synthetic fibres, most often made of polyester, insulate a little less at the same weight but maintain their effectiveness in damp conditions and dry quickly. The loft of a duvet is measured in cuin: the higher the value, the more air it traps. The down jackets from Superdry, Guess or Lyle & Scott display their composition on the label, which should be checked before making a choice.

Didriksons was founded in 1913 in Grundsund, on Sweden's west coast, where Julius and Hanna Didrikson made work clothes for fishermen. Both had lost loved ones at sea due to the lack of suitable clothing for storms. The first models were made waterproof with oil, replaced by rubber in 1930; in 1947, a machine for welding seams allowed for fully waterproof clothing. This legacy is seen in the brand's parkas and waterproof jackets, like the Felia, Jennie, or Tilde, designed for the cold rain of northern cities.
In the city, the coat completes the silhouette. Lyle & Scott, founded in 1874 in Hawick, Scotland, initially for knitwear, features a golden eagle on its down jackets and hooded jackets, adopted in the 1960s during its entry into golf. Guess, born in Los Angeles in 1981, offers fitted women's down jackets, like the New Oxana with a hood. The cotton pea coat Fred Perry, lighter than a wool model, is worn in mid-season over a smart outfit, and the waterproof Fred Perry Brentham protects against showers with a sleek look, from the walk to the office.
A down jacket is rarely washed, on a delicate cycle at thirty degrees with a gentle detergent, then dried in the tumble dryer at low temperature with drying balls that restore the filling's loft. A waterproof jacket loses its water-repellent properties with dirt and friction: a wash with an appropriate product followed by a spray treatment restores its effectiveness, causing water to bead up again on the surface. At the end of winter, clean coats should be stored on a wide hanger or laid flat for the down jacket, in a breathable cover, away from light and moisture.
A parka that goes down to the hips or mid-thigh provides better protection from cold and rain than a short jacket, as it covers the lower back. For biking or driving, a hip-length option is more practical.
It's a jacket made from soft and stretchy fabric, windproof and water-repellent, often lined with a soft face. More breathable than a waterproof jacket, it is suitable for mid-season and activities, like the micropolar softshell Kariban.
A wool coat is best taken to the dry cleaner and brushed regularly to remove dust and hair. It should be hung on a thick hanger, which maintains the shape of the shoulders, and aired out after a damp day.
A down jacket is sensitive to prolonged rain: wet down clumps together and no longer insulates. Models with synthetic filling or water-repellent fabric can handle a shower; otherwise, it’s best to wear a waterproof jacket over it.
Opt for a waterproof coat with a hood, with cuffs that seal well against water and snow, like the Reima Lampi jacket. A bit of extra room, without overdoing it, allows it to be worn all winter without restricting the arms.
