What weight of discus according to the age category

The weight of the discus depends on the age category and the sex of the athlete. According to the regulations of the French Athletics Federation, boys throw a 1 kilo discus in the Benjamin category, 1.25 kilos in the Minime category, 1.5 kilos in the Cadet category, and 1.75 kilos in the Junior category, before the 2 kilos for seniors. For girls, it goes from 600 grams in the Benjamin category to 800 grams in the Minime category, then to 1 kilo starting from the Cadet category, a weight maintained until seniors. The Tremblay discus of 1.5 kilos is therefore meant for Cadets, and the training discus Trial is used for initial learning of the rotation throw.

Foam javelin and weighted ball: introduce throwing safely

Before handling a real javelin, the child learns the technique with a tool that won't hurt. The foam javelin Megaform takes the elongated shape of the competition tool, with a soft tip: it can be used in the gym as well as on the grass and teaches the orientation of the tool, which must land tip first. The weighted ball with grooves from Tremblay, weighing 200 grams, works on the arm's motion above the shoulder and the leg push, which is the basic motion for throwing javelin; its grooves ensure a good grip even with sweaty hands. These two tools allow a whole group to throw at the same time in a small space.

Adjustable posts and elastic: improve high jump

The high jump posts Softee, adjustable up to two meters, hold a bar or elastic at the desired height; their graduations allow for height increases by one centimetre at a time, measuring each progress. For beginners, the elastic replaces the rigid bar: it gives way upon contact without causing harm, freeing the jumper from anxiety. The back technique, the Fosbury-flop, is named after the American Dick Fosbury, Olympic champion in Mexico in 1968; it requires a landing on a thick mat. The scissors jump, which is older, is often taught first, as the jumper lands on their feet.

How to organise a throwing workshop in a club or school

A throwing workshop should be prepared around safety: all throwers throw in the same direction, at the same signal, and no one goes to retrieve a tool until the last throw has landed. For the discus, you first work without rotation, sideways to the landing zone, then with a half turn, before a full turn. The beginner tools, made of rubber or foam, allow for repeated practice without damaging the gym floor. The age-appropriate equipment, which is lighter, also protects the young ones' joints and encourages a precise technique rather than a forceful throw. A meter rule and some markers are enough to measure the throws and track progress.

Frequently asked questions

How to hold a discus for throwing?

Place the discus flat against the palm, fingers spread, with the first joint gripping the edge. The discus is released by the index finger at the end of the rotation: it then spins on itself clockwise for a right-handed thrower, stabilising it in flight.

What weight of weighted ball for a child?

For schoolchildren, a light ball of a few hundred grams is enough to practice the technique without straining the shoulder. The weight is gradually increased with age and strength, always maintaining a fluid motion rather than one of force.

At what age to start high jump?

Children discover high jump as early as primary school, through scissors jumps over a low elastic. The Fosbury-flop, which requires a thick landing mat, is learned later, once the impulse and the run-up are mastered.

Can a training discus be used in competitions?

No, in official competitions the discus must meet the weight and size regulations for the category and come from equipment controlled by the organisers. The training discus is for safely practicing the technique.

How to maintain a club's throwing equipment?

Store discs and weighted balls away from moisture and regularly check the rims and grooved surfaces. Foam javelins can be cleaned with soapy water and should be stored flat to avoid warping.
