The highway code requires, at night or in low visibility, a white or yellow front light and a red rear light, in addition to reflectors and a reflective vest outside urban areas. The Beryl Laserlight Core goes even further: in addition to its 400 lumens beam, it projects a bicycle symbol onto the road about six meters in front of the wheel, visible to drivers before they even see the cyclist, especially in blind spots. The Herrmans headlight designed for electric bikes powers from the bike's battery. At the rear, the Axa Dynamo Ray fixes onto a rack and works with a dynamo, no recharging needed.

The child seat Shotgun is designed for mountain biking: fixed to the top tube of the frame, it places the child in front of the adult, between their arms, with footrests mounted on the frame. The child can see the path, and the rider keeps the weight centred on the bike, preserving balance on trails, where a rear seat shifts the load above the wheel. The Combo Pro version combines the seat with a small handlebars for the child to hold onto. In France, a child under five must travel in a seat designed for this purpose and equipped with a restraint system, and a helmet is mandatory for those under twelve, whether drivers or passengers, since 22 March 2017.
The boot-mounted bike rack fixes onto the hatch or the boot with straps, without a tow bar: the P2R Ariane, made in France, uses six straps and holds three bikes up to 45 kilos, just like the Peruzzo Verona. Before setting off, check compatibility with the vehicle, tighten the straps and secure the bikes together to avoid swinging. The load must not obscure the number plate or the vehicle's lights; failing that, a plate and lighting moved to the support become mandatory. The total weight must not exceed the load indicated by the support manufacturer, nor that allowed on the hatch. Check the strap tension after the first few kilometres.
When biking, you drink a little but often, without waiting to feel thirsty. The bottle is squeezable with one hand without taking your eyes off the road: the Elite Syssa Race, 750 millilitres, is great for long rides, and the Camelbak Podium, more compact, stands out with its valve that closes automatically to prevent leaks in the bag. The bottle cage Elite, lightweight, screws onto the frame inserts and must hold the bottle firmly on both paved roads and trails. For maintenance, rinse the bottles with hot water after each ride, especially with a sugary drink, and leave them open to dry to avoid mould and plastic taste.
In a lit city, a front light of about a hundred lumens is enough to be seen. On an unlit country road, it’s better to aim for three to four hundred lumens to spot obstacles, and more for night mountain biking.
You wait until the child can sit up alone and tolerate a helmet, generally around one year for a regular seat. Front seats for mountain bikes are more suitable from about two years old, within the age and weight limits set by the manufacturer.
Clean the bodywork before installation, as a grain of sand under a pad is enough to mark the paint. The hooks should go in the joints of the boot, never on glass, and tighten the straps progressively and symmetrically.
An electric assist bike follows the same rules as a regular bike. Lighting powered by the bike's battery is however convenient: it turns on with assistance and never needs to be charged separately.
Choose a bottle without bisphenol A and wash it before first use. A rinse with hot water mixed with baking soda eliminates odours, and complete drying, with the cap open, prevents residue from forming.
