The clearance sale of handball club space brings together the coach's tools at the end of the series: tactical boards Select and Kempa, tactical case Softee Diamond for the bench, and spiral coach notebooks Sporti. To prepare sessions, show a system during a time-out, and track each player's progress throughout the year, from handball school to senior teams.

The coach's tools at reduced prices.

Tactical Board Select or Kempa: the miniature pitch

The tactical board replicates a handball court of forty metres by twenty, with its six-metre zones and nine-metre lines, on which the coach draws with a dry-erase marker or moves magnetic pieces. It shows a placement in just a few seconds, more clearly than with words. Select, founded in 1947 in Denmark by Eigil Nielsen, former goalkeeper of the national football team, has become one of the leading suppliers in handball. Kempa, a German brand dedicated to handball, carries the name of Bernhard Kempa, a world champion in eleven-a-side handball, who lent his name to the kempa, the airborne pass caught in suspension.

Time-out: explaining a system in one minute

Each team has three time-outs of one minute per match, with a maximum of two per half: the coach places the green card on the score table when their team has the ball. A minute goes by quickly, hence the interest in the tactical case Softee Diamond, compact, which is held in hand facing the players gathered near the bench. A combination is drawn on half the pitch, a defensive adjustment, or the approach to take when down a player after a two-minute exclusion. When closed, the case protects the board's surface and fits into the bag of the coach between matches.

Aligned or staggered defence: systems to draw

In handball, the defence is drawn before it is repeated. The six-zero defence lines up the six players from field on the six-metre line, solid against the pivot but exposed to long-range shots. The five-one brings in a defender to disrupt the ball's flow and the opposing centre-back. The three-two-one, more staggered, seeks interceptions but requires great mobility. On the board, the coach shows lateral shifts, advances on the ball carrier, and support, then switches to attack with crossings, screens, and play with the pivot. The players visualise their role this way before experiencing it in training.

Coach's Sporti Notebook: preparing and tracking the year

The coach's notebook Sporti, in A5 spiral format, opens flat on a bench or changing room table and fits into any bag. It keeps track of each session: objectives, exercises, durations, and attendance. After matches, it records the lineup, playing times, exclusions, and goals scored by each player. Reviewed over the weeks, it builds a coherent progression, identifies a player who may be lagging, or a weakening area, and prepares for individual discussions. Paper holds an advantage over screens at the edge of the pitch: it risks neither a dead battery nor sun glare.

Frequently asked questions

Magnetic or dry-erase board: what to choose?

The magnetic board allows for moving pieces to simulate a repositioning without erasing anything, ideal for demonstrating a movement live. The dry-erase surface is used to trace trajectories and instructions; most models combine both uses.

How to organise a handball training session?

A typical session consists of a warm-up with the ball, passing and shooting drills, tactical work in situation, then a match. Note the objectives and duration of each segment to maintain a steady pace.

How to explain a tactic to young players?

With the younger ones, a single message per stoppage is enough, shown on the board with two or three pieces. Then have them recreate the situation on the pitch: children understand better by playing than by listening to a long explanation.

What to note after a handball match?

The score by period, successful and missed shots by position, turnovers, exclusions, and each player’s playing time. Add a note for each player: these notes help prepare the next session and track progress.

How to maintain a dry-erase board?

Erase it after each use with a dry brush or soft cloth, and clean it occasionally with a suitable product to avoid ghosting. Only use dry-erase markers: a permanent marker would stain it.
