Victoria was born in 1915 in Cervera del Río Alhama, in La Rioja, when Gregorio Jiménez replaced the esparto fibre of espadrilles with a rubber sole. Based in Logroño since 1928, the brand adopted vulcanisation in 1950 and created the Inglesa, its canvas sneaker with a textured sole, which became its flagship model. The slip-on versions in washed canvas are easy to put on, and models featuring leather effect, animal print, or split leather extend this style beyond the beautiful season. Lightweight and flexible, they fold without creasing and dry quickly after washing.

The platform sole adds several centimetres without the curve of a heel. Buffalo, a brand created in 1979, made this its signature in the mid-1990s with its Classic sneakers, made famous by the Spice Girls; the Cerbo, Orbit, and CLD Chai carry on this spirit with lighter soles. Steve Madden, who launched his brand in New York in 1990 by selling his first pairs from the boot of his car, designs the Possession and Mistica, which have a defined volume. A stable platform is recognised by a sole that is wider than the foot at ground.
The Nike Court Vision takes inspiration from basketball shoes from the mid-1980s: stitched panel upper, low padded collar, perforations on the forefoot. Its Next Nature version contains at least one fifth of recycled materials by weight. It runs large: half a size smaller is often the right fit. The Asics Gel-Quantum, more technical, showcases its Gel cushioning around the heel and ventilates through its mesh upper, while the Nike Initiator adds a retro running touch to this light-toned sports wardrobe.
Tamaris belongs to the German group Wortmann, founded in 1967 in Detmold: its sneakers focus on soft soles and generous fits, designed for long walks. The Skechers Uno is recognisable by its visible air bubble underfoot, the Skech-Air, and its ventilated memory foam insole. The Hey Dude, with elastic laces, slip on without bending down and remain very lightweight. In summer, a light upper reflects the sun's heat, and a removable insole can be washed after the hottest days.
Brush them first to remove dust, then wash them by hand with lukewarm water and mild soap. Some canvas can be machine washed in a mesh bag on a low temperature, but they should always air dry.
The foot swells a bit with heat and walking: a pair that fits in winter may be tight in summer. If you're unsure between two sizes for a sneaker worn barefoot, the larger size is often the more comfortable option.
A thick, soft sole absorbs steps well, and lightweight platforms feel less heavy than they appear. They flex less than flat sneakers: it's best to adopt them gradually before a long day of sightseeing.
Yes, if the elastic upper or laces wrap around the foot snugly without gaping. Choose them well-fitted from the try-on, as the canvas and fabric will stretch slightly over weeks.
Apply a protective spray as soon as you buy them, then wipe the upper with a damp cloth after each outing. A special eraser or a mixture of water and bicarbonate can restore the shine to dull soles.
