From Onitsuka to Asics: a brand born in Kobe

The story of Asics begins in Kobe in 1949, when Kihachiro Onitsuka founded a sports shoe company, initially for basketball. In 1977, the merger of Onitsuka with GTO and JELENK gave rise to Asics, the name of which is derived from the initials of the Latin motto anima sana in corpore sano, a healthy mind in a healthy body, borrowed from the poet Juvenal. The Onitsuka Tiger brand continues to exist separately, and the crossed stripes that it featured on the side of its shoes have become the emblem found today on every Asics model, from running to gym.

Gel, FF Blast and 4D Guidance: cushioning technologies

The Gel technology, created in 1986, houses silicone inserts in the sole, mainly at the heel, to absorb some of the shocks at each landing. The FF Blast foams then made the soles lighter and added bounce, from Novablast to training models. On the Gel-Kayano, a stability shoe named after its creator Toshikazu Kayano, the 4D Guidance System replaces the old firm support on the inner side: a wider base, beveled heel, and more dynamic foam inside guide the foot towards a more neutral stride. The Gel-Nimbus, it, focuses entirely on cushioning for neutral strides.

Novablast, Gel-Nimbus or retro sneakers: which Asics for what purpose

The right model mainly depends on the use. For a neutral stride, the Novablast, lightweight and bouncy, goes from casual jogging to interval training and is great for preparing for a ten-kilometre run. The Gel-Nimbus offers maximum cushioning: it’s the shoe for long runs, half-marathons, and runners who prioritize comfort. On trails, the brand's trail models add a grippy sole and reinforced upper. In terms of style, the retro sneakers, like the Gel-NYC, draw from the running archives of the 2000s: technical lines, layered panels, and comfy Gel sole for everyday wear.

Shoe size, width and fitting of an Asics shoe

Asics running shoes generally fit true to size, with a snug fit around the midfoot. For running, many runners opt for a half size larger, as the foot expands over distance: maintain about a thumb's width in front of the big toe. Some models, like the Gel-Kayano and Gel-Nimbus, come in standard and wide versions, marked 2E for men and D for women, useful for wider feet or runners who use orthotic inserts. The removable insole can easily be swapped for an orthotic, to be slipped into the shoe at fitting.

Frequently asked questions

Which Asics for a heavy runner?

A heavy runner should choose a thick sole and a wide base, like those of the Gel-Nimbus or Gel-Kayano. These models better distribute impact and sag less quickly than lightweight shoes designed for speed.

Which Asics for flat feet?

A flat foot often rolls inward upon landing: a stability shoe like the Gel-Kayano guides it with its 4D Guidance System. If there is pain, a consultation with a podiatrist can determine if a custom insole is needed.

Are Asics running shoes suitable for walking?

Yes, their generous cushioning, especially at the heel, relieves joints during long walks in the city or countryside. The Gel-Nimbus is often chosen by walkers for its comfort over several hours.

How many kilometres do Asics running shoes last?

Expect an average of between six hundred and eight hundred kilometres, depending on the runner's weight, terrain, and foam. A smooth outsole, deep creases in the foam, or new pains indicate that it’s time to replace them.

How to care for Asics running shoes?

Brush off mud once it’s dry, clean the upper with warm soapy water, and let it air dry with the insole removed. Avoid the washing machine and radiator, which weaken adhesives and harden the foam.
