Carp leads: distance, current and self-hooking effect

In carp fishing, the lead is used both for casting and for hooking the fish. Its weight is often expressed in ounces, with one ounce being about twenty-eight grams: a three-ounce lead is enough for a lake, while long casts or current require four or five ounces. Distance leads, like those from Fox or Korda Distance Casting, cut through the air without spinning, while flat or textured leads, such as the Carp Spirit River, stay in place despite the current. Attached to the line or on clips, the lead creates the self-hooking effect: when the carp takes the bait, it feels the weight and hooks itself without the angler needing to strike.

Fishing clearance items

The fishing clearance is organised by type:

Feeder and pole fishing: feeders and bait cages

The feeder is an English method of bottom fishing: a cage filled with groundbait is cast with the bait and disperses food exactly at the fishing spot, near the hook. The Preston Absolute Window cages, available in sizes S to XL, are chosen based on the distance and amount of groundbait needed: small for wary fish or winter, large for keeping a shoal of bream. The Preston Clik Cap feeder, sealed with a lid, carries maggots down to the bottom before releasing them. The fine tip of the feeder rod indicates a bite, and a soft nylon, like the Cresta Intenz Power, absorbs the runs of big fish caught on a fine hooklength.

Predatory lures: spoon, spinnerbait and soft lure

For pike, perch, or zander, each lure has its purpose. The spinning spoon Blue Fox Vibrax, of Swedish origin, has a blade that spins around a weighted body and emits sound vibrations that attract fish, even in murky water. The spinnerbait Strike King, endorsed by Kevin VanDam, a figure in black bass fishing in the United States, combines a skirt and blades on a wire frame that makes it almost weedless. The Trailer hook by Gamakatsu, a Japanese brand founded in 1955, slips behind the hook of the spinnerbait to catch fish that bite short. Lastly, soft lures and hard lures mimic an injured fish based on the action given.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a fishing license to fish in a river?

Yes, fishing in freshwater in France requires joining an accredited association and paying the fee for aquatic environments, which is included in the fishing license. It can be obtained annually, weekly or daily, often online.

How to read a hook size?

The higher the number, the smaller the hook: a number ten-eight for roach, and a number six to two for carp. Beyond number one, the scale reverses with sizes noted one over zero, two over zero, which increase as the number goes up.

What is a hair rig?

Developed by the Englishmen Kevin Maddocks and Len Middleton in the late 1970s, this rig attaches the bait to a line that extends from the hook instead of piercing it. The carp sucks in the boilie without feeling the metal, and the free point pierces its lip.

Barbless hook: why choose one?

Without a barb, like the Gamakatsu Power Carp Barbless, the hook removes in seconds without tearing the fish's mouth, which makes it easier to release it. It requires keeping the line tight throughout the fight, or else the fish may slip off.

How to store boilies?

Long-life boilies remain stable when dry, in their sealed bag or an airtight bucket. Fresh boilies should be kept in the freezer and taken out the day before the fishing trip to regain their aroma.
