Karatégi for kata or kumite: which fabric

The karatégi is chosen based on the discipline. For kata, a thick and structured fabric, around twelve to fourteen ounces, snaps with each technique and keeps its shape during sequences. For kumite, a lighter fabric, about eight ounces, allows for quick movement and dries quickly. The Mizuno Kiai karatégi, made from a polyester and cotton blend, withstands washing better than pure cotton, which shrinks more. The Kwon Traditional trousers, made from eight ounce fabric, are sold separately to replace a worn out bottom, and the children’s karatégis from adidas and Metal Boxe, being softer, support the early years in the club.

End of range items

The clearance sale is organised by type:

Required protections for WKF kumite

In kumite competition, the world federation WKF requires approved protective gear, in red for one fighter and in blue for the other: mitts, shin guards, and foot guards, along with a belt of the same colour. Additionally, a mouthguard, a shell for men, and a chest protector for women are required. The Wacoku WKF gloves and the female chest protector with shell adidas meet these requirements. The Mizuno Karate Shin Instep shin and foot guards, combined into one piece, cover the shin and instep during sparring. In training, non-approved protections are sufficient.

Other sports on clearance

The clearance sale includes other sports: football, running, lifestyle, bicycles, motorcycle, handball, basketball, equestrian, camping, on the clearance page.

Taekwondo: helmet, mitts, and shoes

Taekwondo, a Korean discipline on the Olympic programme since the Sydney Games in 2000, demands proper equipment. The helmet made of foam, like models from Kwon, protects the head from high kicks, which score more points; some versions add a visor. The World Taekwondo approved Kwon mitts, a name adopted by the international federation in 2017, protect the knuckles during blocks and punches to the chest protector. The taekwondo shoes, such as the adidas Adi Kick or the Kwon Dynamic for kids, feature a thin and flexible sole that allows pivoting on the mat.

Frequently asked questions

Karate or taekwondo for a child?

Taekwondo, originating from Korea, prioritizes high and spinning kicks, which are very dynamic. Karate, which originated in Okinawa, balances arm and leg techniques and places a strong emphasis on kata. The choice often depends on the club and the child’s temperament.

What’s the difference between a karatégi and a dobok?

The jacket of the karatégi is crossed and held by the belt, similar to a kimono. The taekwondo dobok often features a V-neck jacket that is pulled over the head, with a black collar reserved for black belts.

Is karate an Olympic sport?

Karate made its only Olympic appearance at the Tokyo Games, held in 2021, with kata and kumite events. It has not been retained for the Paris Games in 2024.

How to choose the size of a karatégi?

Size is expressed in centimetres and corresponds to the height of the practitioner. Between two sizes, choose the larger one, especially in cotton, which shrinks in the first wash; a hem can easily fix trousers that are too long.

How to maintain foam protections?

Wipe them with a damp cloth and mild soap after each session, then let them air dry, never on a radiator which would harden the foam. A disinfectant spray reduces odours between washes.
